This weekend officially kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The American Cancer Society established October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985, and pink ribbons became the official symbol of the cause in 1991.
In the years since, people and organizations around the world have embraced breast cancer awareness and shown support in various creative ways. International landmarks are lit up in pink, artists construct statement-making installations, and professional athletes don pink sweatbands, gloves, and cleats. These demonstrations of support not only aid in raising money for research and treatment, but also educate women on detecting the early signs of breast cancer. This October, King Pins is launching the 'BCA' Pin. Show your support in style – We will be donating $1 of each 'BCA' pin sold to breast cancer research.
Several organizations offer educational tools, fundraise to further advancements in cancer treatment, and provide encouragement and assistance for those diagnosed. According to these groups, in order to be self-aware all women should:
1. Be Informed: Know your genetic family history.
2. Get Check-Ups: Get regular breast exams and mammograms.
3. Know What's Typical For You: Contact a doctor if you notice any changes to your breasts.
4. Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a balanced diet and exercise regularly.
